Yellow

I decided to write about yellow, and post photos of yellow. It’s a color sometimes associated with Autumn like orange and red, but probably more often with Spring and Summer.

But I just felt like I needed yellow.

Being the lightest hue of the spectrum, yellow is uplifting and illuminating, offering hope, happiness, cheerfulness and fun.

I looked up some facts about yellow.

Many studies have linked the psychology of yellow with the sun. Sunlight helps to lift our mood and improve our outlook on life as well as being the source of life on earth.

Yellow affects us physically by stimulating our mental processes and our nervous systems, activating memories, optimism and creativity, and encouraging energy and communication.

In almost every culture yellow represents sunshine, happiness and warmth. However, in Japan yellow represents courage, and in other cultures it can represent treason or persecution. (Think of the yellow star of David worn by Jews during the Holocaust.)

Yellow is the most luminous of all the colors of the spectrum. It’s the color that captures our attention more than any other color, and the human eye processes yellow first. That’s why it’s used for caution signs and emergency vehicles.

Many studies have shown that large areas of yellow can cause dizziness or nausea. This is why you don’t see it used as the main color in advertising. It will be used in smaller doses to draw attention instead. I read that you will almost never see yellow used in the interiors of different forms of transportation like buses and airplanes because it gets to your head. Try painting a whole room yellow and see how you feel ! Used as an accent color it’s great though.

When I was going through my photos looking for yellow, I realized that I don’t have many. There are a lot of red, pink, blue, and green, but very few yellow. I guess that just proves that what I discovered is true. Yellow is a “support” color, not the main event color.

But for me, I just think yellow is cheerful, and it’s one of my favorite colors.
